Edward Elric

Edward holds the record for being the youngest State Alchemist, having been certified as a genius at the age of twelve. Due to his age, and his status, he was given a long leash that allowed him to avoid some of the more standard experiences, like basic training. He was given to Colonel Roy Mustang's command and has served under him since that time.

Throughout his adventure, Edward stumbles into some dark, inconvenient truths about the state of Amestris and its military, the constant conflicts and the dark conspiracy plot that is leading to the country's demise, like Xerxes before it. He works with Mustang as a rebel to take back their country from the immortal beings called hommunculi.

Edward is consistently covered from neck to toe, always wearing gloves and often with his red duster, with the flamel on the back. This is due to keeping his automail out of sight, and to protect him from the temperature changes associated with automail. Notably he has an automail right arm and left leg.

AlchemyEdward has extensive knowledge, not just through study but also through seeing the Gate where he was inundated with more knowledge than humans should be able to hold. This allows him to use alchemy to change just about anything. He knows countless arrays and doesn't even need them - only needing to clap his hands together and form a connection. He just needs to understand each step of the process and have the equivalent exchange.

Edward Elric was born in 1899 to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim. His brother would follow in 1900. Hohenheim decided that he needed to walk away from his family when the boys were still toddlers, leaving Trisha alone to raise the two in the quiet town of Risembool. In 1904, Trisha would become ill and die, leaving Edward and Alphonse on their own, under the semi-watchful eye of the Rockbells down the road.

To the East, war raged in Ishval, and the Rockbells as doctors, went to assist. Winry's parents would not come home, leaving all three children to Pinako's care. The same year, Izumi Curtis would travel through Risembool and be convinced to take Edward and Alphonse on as apprentices. They would go do training with them for roughly six months before returning. In 1910, Ed and Al would attempt human transmutation to resurrect Trisha which leads to failure and a backlash - Al would lose his body and Ed would lose his limbs. One for the failure that was Trisha, one to pull Al's soul back from the Gate.

Not long after this, Mustang would be passing through looking for Edward believing him to be an adult. Regardless, he would recruit Ed and Ed would spend the next year getting automail and rehabilitating, before he enlisted in October of 1911. From then on, Edward would search for the Philosopher's Stone, in an effort to set his and Al's bodies back to rights, acknowledging that their original sin was far worse than they could have expected.
