★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★
Skills:
*Knowledge of Alchemy
*Hand to hand combat
*Polearm proficiency
Canon Abilities:
*Knowledge of Alchemy: A lucky winner in that it gets to be listed twice - Edward's knowledge was significantly amplified and changed when he passed through The Gate twice, giving him significantly more insight than he could've possibly studied in the short amount of years he'd been alive at that point. This insight allows him to know at a glance the composition of most items, as well as knowing the necessary alchemy circles at any given moment. The manifestation of this is not needing to draw the circles, a simple clap of his hands and he can perform alchemy - but he has to know what he's doing, and thanks to The Gate, he does. This knowledge is limited to the technology of the time, and it's 1915.
*Alchemy: Alchemy allows for the components of a material to be changed to suit a new purpose, through the energy conduit that is the alchemist. Edward is particularly powerful, and the limit is pretty much his energy level. Making something requires the components to be available, at the very least at a molecular level. Transmutation involving organic creatures overwhelmingly does not work as intended. Cannot be used to raise the dead.
Role: Myth
Role Qualities/Attributes: Initially, he will manifest sharpened teeth and the ability to see in the dark, but over time he will add claws, horns and a tail.
Role Reasoning: Despite the fact that Edward is definitely the overthrow the government type - as he's working on that exact project - his entire quest has been motivated through selfish reasons. He joined the military to seek out the Philosopher's Stone, and while he has hurt people along the way, tangled them in this chaos and mess he brings with him, that remains his primary goal. He wants to restore his brother's body, and his own and he will stop at nearly nothing to do so. The fact he uncovered an inconvenient country-wide plot is a side effect and while it has to be dealt with, it hasn't changed his goals, and when he's realized those goals, he'll cast aside the very military he's sworn to.
★ Personality ★
OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:
While losing his mother was traumatic - the human transmutation that he and Alphonse attempted definitely surpassed it in spades. Not only did he very nearly lose his brother, but he found himself mutilated and broken from the experience, he'd passed through The Gate, giving him a wealth of knowledge he had no way of processing.
Edward was physically changed, having lost his right arm and left leg, it left him despondent until he was offered a lifeline and a path forward. He underwent automail surgery and set about trying to right the wrongs he'd done, to restore Al's body and his own. From that moment on, he turned his back on the past and moved forward, no matter what he encountered he was going to resolve his quest and reach his goal, no matter how long it took. He became incredibly determined.
Above everything else though, Edward gained an understanding. His formulae were not wrong, but his hubris and the disregard he gave for what was the beauty of life was, and although he's undergone this quest to restore what he lost, he understands why it didn't work and why it never could.
Despite being a member of the military, Edward was rather ambivalent towards it. He was never particularly patriotic, surrounding himself with people who quite rightfully have gripes with how the military handles their relationship with various areas. He saw the military as a tool and a stepping stone to get what he wanted without really understanding the consequences of what he was agreeing to do, even though he was sure he did.
Ultimately as things unraveled, discovering that in fact their government was not at all on the level and is being run and directed by homunculi in service of the Father, he becomes entangled in the internal struggle that it is to oust these creatures and save the population of Amestris. He felt not allegiance to the government as it was - but what it could be and he placed his faith in his commander Roy Mustang and his team to overthrow this mess, as well as putting his weight behind it.
His feelings have changed from mere ambivalence or indifference to the institution to being a wholeheartedly patriotic and supportive person involved in the rebellion. His allegiance is to the future of the country as opposed to the present, but it's the kind of thing that he would feel the need to keep an eye on.
The primary motivator for his entire quest is his brother. The only biological family he has left, his younger brother and him were always incredibly close, having to raise themselves and each other after their mother's death when they were four and five. Alphonse is his moral compass, and often his babysitter because he has little else to do but think whereas Edward is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Edward is far more desperate and ambitious in the worst ways without Al to keep him in check. He would go to hell and back for his brother and is willing to sacrifice himself to see Al's happiness, although that's not something he's admitted because that conversation would not go well.
He shares a close bond with The Rockbells as well. Pinako, an old friend of his father's and their neighbour, often did a bit of caretaking while they were growing up. While the boys didn't actually live with her, she often gave them food and other necessities. Edward is fond of her and considers her to be family, always returning to her home when they come back to Resembool. Her granddaughter, Winry, is his closest friend. A childhood friend to them both and now Ed's automail mechanic, he and Winry have an explosive, challenging relationship partly because as they get older it's evolving from a cute friendship to an awkward romance, but also because their personalities clash. Despite that fact, both of them can take it and Winry is the only other person he might lean on in times of trouble, and the only person he confides in about Al.
Edward will lie, cheat and steal if he thinks it's in service of a greater good and no time is this more evident than the trickery he pulled at the Youswell mine. He'll break any law that doesn't serve his purpose, and as long as he's not likely to get caught. That's not to say he's entirely morally bankrupt however, he believes that stepping on the population is wrong and unnecessary. He has no problem doling out violence to someone he feels deserves it, but the innocents should be protected. Above all else, he's vehemently opposed to human transmutation, thanks to his personal experiences and will dole out what he sees to be necessary punishment for someone who experiments on humans. He demonstrates compassion to the inmates on death row that were transmuted into suits of armor, refusing to kill them.
The fact is that these people he targets, he believes they deserve it. Yoki didn't treat the miners right so it was no harm to unseat him and give the power back to the people, even if they hated him personally. He understands so much more the hate towards the military having explored the country and seen what they're all doing to the populations. In a lot of places, his actions could be seen as reprehensible but frankly the world around him is in such trouble he's coming across as the good guy in just about every situation.
